Take a wetlands vacation!

Take a wetlands vacation!

It’s May– that means it’s time to make plans for the summer. May is also American Wetlands Month.  As for me, these two things are interconnected because I love wetlands.

So when I think about vacationing, I find myself looking for a destination on the Ramsar wetlands website – a site that lists thousands of wetlands all over the world that are considered Wetlands of International Importance.

Wetlands provide many services including flood attenuation, carbon sequestration, and nutrient processing. I know these are big words, but they are also big benefits.

Recreation and tourism are some of the less-often recognized services that wetlands provide.  Are wetlands really tourist destinations? Absolutely! In fact, about 35% of the over 2,000 Ramsar wetland sites worldwide inspire visitation, and the interest in sustainable, ecotourism continues to grow.

Responsible tourism also supports wetlands and people. And while you can measure the economic benefits of wetlands, there’s just no way to measure the pleasure derived from experiencing a special place.

So, start Maydreaming! Get outside, expand your horizons, and begin your environmental journey today!
