Currently, EPA hosts the following data networks: CDX, EPA Portal, EXES, and Business Intelligence. EPA also utilizies multiple data templates each with different data standards for data exchanges, such as: SCRIBE, eDWR, SDWIS, SEDD, and ERLN. Laboratories often must submit data differently depending upon the EPA program, while data consumers must access each data feed separately. These multiple data templates and standards increase costs and turnaround time for data generators and consumers.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) recommends that EPA consider work to standardize data across and within their program areas in concert with the current challenge.

EPA should consider a single laboratory data standard (contact megan.latshaw@aphl.org for a copy of specific recommendations) that can be adopted not only across EPA, but also across the federal government and state agencies. Such standardization will lead to increased efficiency related to data sharing, review, validation, and interpretation of important environmental data.

I am trying to develop an application which will utilize Air Quality System (AQS), AIRNow and AIRNow Tech data sets. My question is how do I use these datasets in my application. Are there any API’s that EPA provides which I can call in my application? Thanks for your time.

Looking for data sets pertaining to single use disposable cups, paper and plastic. How much co2 is generated by paper mills, how much oil is used for the entire life cycle of a plastic/paper cup including transportation of goods? How much water is used to turn a seed into a forest and how much water do paper mills use in the process of making forests into paper? How many trees are used per cup? What are the real environmental and financial costs of single use disposable cups? Why is recycled paper more expensive that virgin paper?

We’ll see what data EPA has that’s related to the items you describe. Some of this information is not about data per se, but instead could be analyses that EPA or others could perform.

Or maybe these could be posted in the Ideas for Apps area so developers can make apps that address them (http://blog.epa.gov/data/ideasforappscomments/). How does that sound?
