Have a “Green” Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is here, and with that, a slew of fun, healthy and green things to do across all five boroughs!

1st Annual Community Garden Domino Tournament – This free domino tournament is open to players of all ages, rating, and strengths. Games will be held two Saturdays a month from May 26 through August 25 in the El Flamboyan Community Garden in The Bronx. Saturday May 26th, 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Food Truck Rally – Head to Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn to sample treats from New York’s best food trucks. If you feel like burning off your lunch afterwards, take a walk around the adjacent Prospect Park. Sunday, May 27th, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Free Memorial Day Concert – The Bronx Arts Ensemble will be performing in Van Cortlandt Park this Sunday with works from great American Composers of various periods. Sunday, May 27, 2:00 p.m.

Movies in the Park – Bring a chair or blanket and come out to a free showing of “Hugo” at Queen’s Frederick B. Judge Playground. Friday, May 25th, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Veggie Pride Parade – Vegetarians and vegans have their own parade! If you fall into one of these categories (or if you’re just veg’n-curious), this is a can’t-miss event! Sunday, May 27, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Weekend Warriors – Enlist yourself in the war against weeds and help spruce up the grounds of Staten Island’s Greenbelt Nature center with other nature-loving city dwellers. Saturday, May 26, 10:00 a.m.

Carousel Opening Day – Celebrate the start of carousel season and the beauty of horses at Willowbrook Park’s Carousel Opening Day! Games, activities and prizes will be available for the whole family. Saturday, May 5, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

GreenDay 2012 – Join NYSERDA, Solar One and many other great environmental organizations for GreenDay 2012! Build a wind-turbine and solar car; join an ecology walk along the East River; learn energy-saving tips to lower your utility bills; learn about green jobs and volunteer opportunities and so much more! Saturday, May 5, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

NYC Safe Disposal – The NYC Department of Sanitation is holding a “SAFE” (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, Electronics) Disposal Event in Brooklyn this Sunday to provide area residents with a one-stop method to get rid of potentially harmful household products. What a perfect way to put your spring cleaning into high gear! Sunday, May 6, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Plant Starts Giveaway – Since 2002, GreenThumb has been providing organic, non-GMO plants in unique varieties for distribution to community gardens. Come get some plant starts, and learn square foot gardening tips and techniques. Saturday, May 5, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Citizen Pruner Tree Care Course: It’s not cheap, but if you’ve ever wanted to be a certified NYC tree pruner, this is the class to take! Learn the fundamentals of tree care, tree identification and pruning, as well as how to follow city regulations and safety standards. Monday, April 30, 6-8 p.m.

Cooking Demonstration: Spring herbs are the focus of this cultivation and cooking lesson, free with admission to Wave Hill Gardens. Sunday, April 29, 2 p.m.

The Great Recycle: Kick your recycling habit up a notch. Pledge to recycle more bottles than ever and help celebrate Honest Tea’s New York City recycling campaign at this Times Square, day-long event. Monday, April 30, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

E-Waste Recycling: Did the rain deter you from recycling your electronics last week? There are still plenty of opportunities. Bring your old tech stuff to Morningside Park and lighten your load. Sunday, April 29, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day: Clean out your medicine cabinets and keep harmful substances out of our waterways. Find collection centers near you. Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. -2 p.m.

New Amsterdam Market: The season starts up for this local and sustainable market held at the historic Fulton Fish Market location. Sunday, April 29, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Riverside Park Planting Volunteer Day: Come out to Riverside Park to help out with restoration planting. Saturday, April 28, 9:30 a.m.

Sakura Matsuri Festival: Cherry blossom season culminates this weekend with the Sakura Matsuri Festival in celebration of Japanese culture. Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29.

Street Games: Double-dutch, hula hoops and stickball – you’re never too old to learn! Come to the Thomas Jefferson Park in Harlem on Saturday April 28, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Looking to get involved this Earth Day? Check out the links below for a sample of activities going on in your community. While you’re out and about, take a photo any time during the 24 hour period of April 22 and upload it to your Flickr account to share it with EPA’s State of the Environment group. EPA will be highlighting one photo from each U.S. state or territory and will feature the state with the most participation! Let’s go NY!

A Clearing in the Forest: Earth Day Celebration: Concert and mini-garden planting in Central Park. Sunday, April 22, 12:00 –2:00 p.m.

B’Earthday: Come celebrate Earth Day and the Audubon Center’s 10th Anniversary! Enjoy nature games, tours, lakeshore clean-up, educational activities, performances and crafts.Sunday, April 22, 1:00  –4:00 p.m.

Earth Day 2012 5K Run/Walk and Fair: The celebration includes the Kids’ Earth Day Kingdom featuring environment-themed displays, live entertainment, inflatable rides, face painting, games and contests, arts & crafts activities. The winners of the Annual “Calendar Art Contest” will be recognized and awarded their prizes on the main stage. The Fair is preceded by the HCIA’s Annual 5K Race and the 5K Fitness Walk to benefit the Friends of Liberty State Park. Saturday, April 21, 9:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m. at the Historic CRRNJ Terminal at Liberty State Park.

Earth Day at Grand Central Terminal: The annual New York City EarthFair will be held inside Grand Central Terminal in Vanderbilt Hall from Thursday, April 21- Saturday, April 21 and outside of Grand Central Terminal on Friday, April 20.

Earth Day on the High Line: Celebrate the end of High Line Spring Cutback and the beginning of spring with a day of community festivities at the High Line. Chelsea Market Passage on the High Line at West 15th Street. Sunday, April 22, 10:00 a.m. –4:00 p.m.

Earth Day at the Staten Island Zoo: Celebrate the Earth with the Staten Island Zoo. Stop by an Education Station and learn about composting and how you can do it in your own home! Sunday, April 22, 1:30 –3:30 p.m.

Earth Day Times Square: Stonehenge’s Ritz Plaza Firefighters’ Memorial Park, 235 West 48th Street. Sunday, April 22, 11:00 a.m. –3:00 p.m.

Let’s Watch Movies Outdoors (Earth Day Edition): After you plant a tree or go pick up trash on the beach this Sunday, make sure you save some space in the evening for a special (free) screening from Rooftop Films. Though their summer season doesn’t kick off until Friday, May 11, the veteran outdoor film festival will be hosting an Earth Day screening of the BBC’s Planet Earth. Saturday, April 21, 7:00 p.m.

New York Cares Day: Clean. Plant. Volunteer. Fundraise. Saturday, April 21, 9:30: a.m. –3:00 p.m.

Nourishing Earth Day: Volunteer to help out at this festival, which provides information on healthy eating and protecting the environment. Bread Basket at Woodycrest United 89 West 166th St Bronx, NY, Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. –2:00 p.m.

Safe Disposal Event: Union Square, Manhattan. Sunday, April 22, 10:00 a.m. –4:00 p.m.
