What a great article! In today's consumer-driven society, it is easy to become mindless and wasteful in our consumption. It is extremely important to raise awareness about these issues, whether it be recycling, conserving power, or reducing one's consumption and therefore eliminating waste from your life (specifically food that goes to waste, in this case). Educating the general public about the importance of reducing, reusing (when possible) and recycling may be redundant at this point because it has been stressed as important for so long, but I also think that if the issues are re-framed into more specific goals they will be more understandable and relatable for people. I think that if children were taught about the importance of composting, recycling, and conserving energy and resources, they will latch on to the concept and carry those values and habits throughout their lives.
