We don’t! In fact, we shouldn’t.

Years ago studies showed that states that spent the most on environmental protection had the best economic health.

If they are truly free-marketed orientated, they must surely choose the latter on economic efficiency grounds alone. Even so, regulatory standards or at least the threat of regulation will be needed to keep resource thieves and polluters honest.

As acknowledged by the industry, old coal power plants are not really cost effective. But I wonder how many newer coal-fired central-generating plants with all their thermal energy wastage and fuel subsidies would be cost effective if true pricing were incorporated.

On the other hand, corporations and individuals producing a product should not have their profits and incomes diminished through punitive taxation. The keeping of the fruits of one’s labor is what drives job creation. Properly priced natural resource inputs should yield properly priced products with any pollution externalities internalized through pollution taxes or regulation. Pick your poison.

Such a measure is not negotiable with the dirty fuels lobby.
