Wow! You just did two great things, one after the other. The tires are the parts of the car that first come into contact with the road. That is why your tires should always have deeper tracks: to have a firmer grip on the surface.
It makes me sick when people toss tires into municipal landfills! Tires aren't just made out of rubber, they also contain toxic substances that can leach into groundwater or release toxic chemicals into the air if they are burned.

Denise, I'm surprised the serviceman said they throw the tires right into the dumpster. That's not right. Tires are definitely recyclable. Because of their potential negative effects on the environment, tires should always be recycled or reused. Here's a link to the EPA page on tire recycling: http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/tires/faq.htm

That's great! Denise, you were very proactive with the recycling. Most people don't do that at all. I'd say, many reputable tire businesses ensure that the tires are recycled. For example, I work with TireVan - a mobile tire installer - who also offers EPA employees in the DC metro area a discount! We have a relationship with an area facility that all used tires that we remove from our customers' vehicles are promptly recycled.

That is wonderfull, You did a great thing, however where I live, they are supposedly forced by the govt. to charge the disposal fee anyway!
Even though we also have recycler that will dispose of them for us. They claim it must be charged in order to sell a new tire!
(I have been instructed as such by several tire retailers in our area.)

Did you investigate used tires? There are vendors that specialize in re-selling almost new, gently worn tire for a fraction of the price (and the balancing, etc.). Give used tires a new life, save money and report instances of disposal fee fraud to the proper authorities.
