Science Wednesday: A Cluster for Clean Water Innovations

When people think fashion, they think Milan and New York. The San Francisco Bay area has been dubbed “Silicon Valley,” the geographic heart of the high-tech computer industry. And although I’ve never been there myself, I still conjure up images of fine wine and cuisine whenever someone mentions a trip to Paris.

Sometimes, a critical mass of experts, producers, and innovators come together to the benefit of an entire industry. It’s the classic win-win situation where everyone involved, from the producers of a product to the consumers benefit from a spirit of collaboration and healthy competition.

Someday soon, Southwestern Ohio, Southeastern Indiana and Northern Kentucky will be known as the Milan, Paris, and “Silicon Valley” of clean water technology.

Yesterday, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson joined the administrator of the Small Business Administration, Karen Mills, University of Cincinnati President Gregory H. Williams, and local officials at the Agency’s environmental research center in Cincinnati to announce the launch of the Water Technology Innovation Cluster (WTIC).

The WTIC will spur the research and develop of new environmental technologies for improving water quality in local communities. Through a series of collaborations, investments in small businesses, and research grants, EPA and partners will support the development of green infrastructure projects, advancements in water monitoring technologies and sensor devices, and new ways to remove multi-contaminants from drinking water.

WTIC directly supports EPA’s new Drinking Water Strategy to foster development of new drinking water treatment technologies by developing, testing and commercializing innovative processes and technologies that are sustainable, and water and energy efficient. The new products will be cost effective for utilities and consumers.

In the process, WTIC will attract the best and the brightest scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and small business owners to drive innovation, create jobs, and foster investments in a sustainable future. The economy, the environment, and the country stand to benefit. It’s a win-win-win.

    Ala Space Station Water Cluster : For The Future.
    People are extravagant to use the water, although must be pay. The water step by step are expensive, however long ago are free and so much. By WTIC, that’s indicating emergency about the water today, however human skills will be journeys wherever around the world and the planets in the future. I hope, one of the strategy, is working together between EPA and NASA. Congratulations WTIC and good luck!!!!

    I HAVE MY CERTIFICATE IN WATERSHED MANAGEMENT FROM CHAPMAN, UNIVERSITY, ORANGE , CALIF…WHILE DOING MY WATERSHED RESEARCH PROJECT SAN ANTONIO CREEK, CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST FOR OUR UPLAND , CALIF WATERSHED, MR. GUYMON, NEPDES COORDINATOR AND I FOUND A LEAD AND BURNT TIRE TOXIC WASTE DUMP JUST A SHORT DISTANCE FROM A RANGER STATION..AS THIS WAS A FEDERAL CRIME , WE REPORTED IT AND THE AUTHORITIES CLEANED IT UP..13% of UPLAND’S WATER COMES FROM THIS WATERSHED..AND I FEEL THE RANGER STATION WAS AND IS UNDERSTAFFED..AS I WAS A GS-3 AT GLACIER PARK, I KNOW WHAT A TRAIL CREW CAN DO..NOW HELPING OUR WATER SUPPLY IS JUST A FEW PAID AND HIGHLY TRAINED TRAIL CREW MEMBERS AWAY AT THE CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST..WE NEED MORE EYES AND EARS ON THE GROUND..VERY SIMPLE , CHEAP, AND EFFECTIVE.     We use a 1/2 micron water filter to make certain unwater biological agents are removed.

    Les envío el presente, para compartir el hecho de que en mi escuela secundaria donde laboro por las tardes, analicé la situación de infraestructura, advertí que los alumnos consumían agua, si bien es potable, no era del todo para el consumo humano, por contener partículas inapropiadas para los jovenes; por ello, impulsé y logré instalar una planta purificadora de agua; ahora los jovenes alumnos la consumen, sin riesgo.
    Es pues mi deseo de compartir el proyecto, en bien de la sociedad futura. Reciban un cordial saludo, Felicidades….

    Hi Ameshia,

    Great Job! Your first EPA blog has feeling (brought tears to my eyes), inspiration and incentive and is not just for children but for anyone who has vision and passion and who want to succeed. Your desire to work for NASA is awesome (don’t give that up), as well as your pursuing a environmental policy education as a graduate student, in spite of so many many obstacles. You are very strong, and you have demonstrated the power of an idea, the desire to succeed and the courage to share with others as well. Your blog can very helpful in motivating others, especially children who are experiencing so many obstacles today. The Gary Comer Youth Center is a great opportunity for children to learn, have fun, and to be children. I am so pleased that you joined EPA as a STEP intern in ARD and that you are doing a great job assisting me, thanks to Megan Gavin. Keep on bloging, you can be a role model for others.

    Russia and British Petrolium /BP/ want to do the bore holes at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean to get oil. BP besmeared the south of US in the Gulf of Mexico already. Now BP may do it on the north of US , where Alaska is. What the Water Technology Innovation Cluster may we talk about under the circumstances?

    Water protection has emerged as a number one priority within our Official Community Plan process this year. The first water protection association in this municipal community started by volunteers in 1998. The “six step” system template adopted for this community from the American experience was never completed. Now, water protection appears as a strong public sentiment. I would guess the last ice age or beneath ground topography may be a determining factor to find the best areas to develop.

    Dear Captian Kamansky: We have the knowledge to improve the water
    by removing the Impurtitives such as iron, lead and most all impurtives,
    even arsenic. We use no chemicals and we are not reverse osmoses which
    if you send 100 gallons of water through the filter you will get about 20 gal
    and 80 gal goes to waste. If you are really intrested then e-mail me and I
    will get the information to you. We find that we encounter a bunch of people who are interested but will not do any thing to see the results. If
    you are really interested we will give you a demostration. Little to no maintance, no chemicals all green and no responce.

    We find that most of the people who say they want all green just want
    their name on something. After the reconition they fade away and are
    not contactable to get the info. Change is the furture and with new
    apporaches we have a bunch of set in their ways visionaries. It’s not
    hard to listen, see or whatever they need to prove the system works
    just need opportunities. Thanks an have a Good Day.

    Clean water is very necessary to see lots of clean water is now widely contaminated. So that makes getting clean water with only a small possibility. Therefore, you should never destroy nature by removing the existing waste to any place. This generated a lot of harm to oneself and others.
