Kudos on taking action to help these people. Many rural people burn kerosene for lighting and cooking. As a result, they inhale some very toxic smoke that can cause health problems. Jatropha can help mitigate that. In great enough quantities, it can also be a decent source of income.

There's some controversy around jatropha but it always seems to be the result of ill-conceived projects. For example, while jatropha can grow in a wide range of conditions, if the soil isn't right or the rainfall is too low, then the oil yield may fall well short of expectations. That's why Bedford Biofuels (for whom I raise investment dollars for large-scale jatropha projects) is partnered with a leading R&D company who have spent over $400M to get it right. We're not into guessing when so much money is at stake.

Some ill-informed groups may bring up "food vs fuel". I don't advocate displacing food crops but I am a big fan of planting jatropha on unused land and, because it's a tree, intercropping with other crops or with cattle. That's already being done successfully. It seems that some people object to any sort of change... even when the people in the area are fully in favour of it!

Congratulations again on taking action.
