I would love to see a town wide initiative to planting trees. It would be wonderful if some of the older trees that are dying that need to be removed were removed in a cost effective way to improve the community along with planting new appropriate ones in their place.
Most people can't afford to take down the dying trees. Possibly somehow these trees could be taken down and used, recycled for mulch, and wood that could pay for the cost. We would really need the cooperation and financial assistance from our town. Right now I know when there are storms the towns participate in clearing the roads of fallen trees but at a very high inflated cost do to the timing of doing it after the storm brings down the trees that could of been taken down prior to the storm at a very substantially lower cost. I know there would be volunteers and this could be a requirement for receiving the benefit of having dying trees removed and than replaced with more suitable trees that would protect the enviroment along with protecting the wildlife and air quality at the same time. I live in a small town in New Jersey and I would like to know if anyone is interested in getting this started and how we would go about it. I live in South Plainfield and can be reached at jancope21@aol.com Trees for Life

earth hour is just grandstanding. it's all nonsense. if university's (and i mention them because they're the WORST of all the hypocrites) REALLY gave a crap about the environment perhaps they would cancel some of their HUGE campus wide events, stop bringing in big-name entertainers for all-day music fests (which use tons of energy, btw), and actually DO something worthwhile.

earth hour is stupid. i was on a jet plane.

Earth Day is an amazing way get inform people about whats going on in the world around them!
Last year, I worked with the Ecology Club at the local highschool and set up and Earth Day booth with hotdogs and hamburgers cooked with solar ovens. Students that approached were given information about easy ways to help out and reduce waste and pollution. It was a great day for all :)

The Division of Environmental Health at the Florida Department of Health is sponsoring its second annual Earth Day Celebration. We solicit volunteers department-wide to coordinate this event which takes place in the Capitol Circle Office Complex in Tallahassee. This office park includes approximately 9 state offices which employ thousands of people. Green-oriented businesses as well as DOH programs set up displays under the oak trees to disseminate information on sustainable practices employees can implement both at home and in the workplace. Community exhibitors have included the local recycling services, a solar company and the department's health promotion staff.

People can plant some plants and even take some steps to stop the tree cutting by protesting. We usually gone through the situation where one tree cuts but no one ensures that the empty space of that tree should filled with new plant. If we work for that the planet will be saved and earth day is likely to be celebrated at the end.
