The real issue is the start-up time of the laptops. If the laptops could be made to start up faster, then people wouldn't leave them on standby & making them vampires. Perhaps the manufacturers should be tasked to making the laptops more energy efficient.

We have a few number of desktops as well as a couple of laptops. Laptops are ok on energy because of their batteries, but the desktops are indeed "vampires", especially since they are usually left powered up unattended.

We too have a number of computers in the household. We're moving towards more energy saving steps of either shutting the ones off not in use and or putting them into an energy saving mode quicker.

We also have moved towards more energy efficient appliances and floresent lights. We've noticed our electric bill reduce dramatically.

I help people buy homes and the "green" trend is something many home buyers are interested in these days.

However there is often confusion with some of the "green" comparisons.

For example with holiday lights:

1. LED lights do use up less energy.

2. Many people discard their lights every few years.

3. LED lights cost subtantially more than regular lights.

4. Holiday Lights are often only run for about six hours a day during about a month out of the year.

After doing some basic math based on current energy costs I've come to this conclusion:

If you are going to throw out functional lights to buy LED lights it could easily take you close to 10 years to break even on energy costs.

If you want to change to LED lights for the long term that is fine. (They can potentially last much longer.)

But to throw out a functional set of lights to buy LED lights that you may toss in a few years is not conserving energy or expense!
