On the Green Road: Grey Towers

2008 June 3

About the author: While Karen Reshkin of our Chicago office enjoys her vacation, she’s sending along environmentally relevant thoughts and pictures.

Milford, PA: The view from Grey Towers, home of James Pinchot, the first Chief of the US Forest Service. The mansion itself is amazing. It was donated to the USFS in 1963. It’s a key site in the history of conservation in the US.

Editor’s note: thanks to Dee for catching the mistake on Gifford Pinchot’s first name.

It is my understanding that Gifford Pinchot was the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Perhaps his father’s name was James?

Yup, Grey Towers was built by Gifford’s Dad, James. I think Gifford grew up there and I know he spent a lot of summers there as an adult. Gifford’s son (also a Gifford) gave the place to the Forest Service.

My favorite Pinchot quote: “Innovations never happen as planned.”

Green roads can reduce CO2 level & road pollution if EPA
includes road air quality data online with real time data.Grey tower can monitor with PC based SCADA system.
