Question of the Week: Why are you or aren’t you biking to work?
Each week we ask a question related to the environment. Please let us know your thoughts as comments. Feel free to respond to earlier comments or post new ideas. Previous questions.
To bike or not to bike – that is the question… It’s National Bike Week! Biking is healthy, it prevents air pollution, and it can even save you money (filled your tank recently?). So why aren’t you biking to work? Need more bike paths? Different policies from your employer? Government sponsorship or policies? Or are you just a couch potato?
Why are you or aren’t you biking to work?
If you ARE biking, tell us about your route and experiences!

why not just ride on the side of the roads that way u want get killed. also just ride when it is fall or when it is cool.
In addition, I love to bike because it would also help me exercise while saving some cash. unfortunately, my only time to bike is during weekends. But still I am thankful because I have a time. It just made me sad because I sweat to much and I can’t go to work using my bike.
Thank you for this wonderful post.
I get up so early for work that its still cold. When I get off work, its really dark. I only have a 3 mile commute though.

I don’t use the bike as I find the air very polluted and the traffic seems to be getting worse.
I would love to get some exercise once in a while
I ride an electric bike to work. Commuting to central London i do about 17 miles in a day. It was either a bike or a moped, electric bike won as i didnt want to deal with insurance etc!
I am really looking forward to getting an electric car for my work. Currently, I run a Home Watch Business and I can’t even imagine the costs this would save me when I have to drive back and forth to the clients. And I could advertise that I am green? yeah, that is a win-win in my book!
Great blog of biking to work.
I like this blog.
Very useful blog.
I bike to work when the skies are clear.
If there is no rain in the forecast I will bike to work (4 miles).
I also avoid extreme temperatures. 40-90 degrees with clear skies and I am on the bike.
I live 24 miles from work but bike year around, New York State.
My compromise is to “park and ride”. All communities have shopping malls. I found one 6 miles from my job. I ride from home to the mall, park and ride the remaining six miles to work.
Wow MaryAnne. I get why you’re angry, but Karen rides a train and walks to work with a broken toe so I think it’s OK to cut her some slack.
I bike to and from work every day! I live in Las Vegas so even though the temperatures get ridiculous in the summer, it’s still nice to be able to have so many sunny days to bike to work. The only think that’s a nuisance is my bike helmet messing up my hair and not being able to shower at work.
I go biking in the mountains with friends on weekends
I go biking a couple of times a week, I don’t bike to work but I am planning on increasing my biking frequency.
Thanks
biking to work is one of the ways to reduce greenhouse gas. Creating more bike paths would be useful for this purpose.
It is equally important to improve public transportation system putting more public buses and metros for public uses in order to reduce the number of cars on the streets. In this way, we can reduce green house gas by taking buses/metros and reducing a large number of private cars on the streets.
It is not everyone likes to driving. Because of the poor public transportation system, public buses are not reliable regarding arriving on time.
The bus time schedules are not useful. Many times, the buses did not show up. You can hear that the bus broken down, or the bus driver is taking a urgent leave, and so on. Keep bus on schedule is never enforced. For example, in order to meet bus schedule at rush hour, the bus managers should send our more buses on the road. However, this has never been the case. Same number of buses on road no matter it is rush hour or non-rush hour. Drivers are not enfored to keep bus schedules. Because public buses are not reliable, people have to buy a car to move around keeping their live.
Therefore, it is the key to reduce greenhouse gas by greatly improving bus services, so that people can rely on the bus to do things for daily need.
Improving gas mileage is one way to reduce green house gas. Reducing the number of cars on the streets is another way to reduce greenhouse gas. It is no less important than increasing car gas mileage.
Only would public transportation be improved, reducing the number of cars on the street could be realized.

Nice blog. biking is very good exercise compare to walking. it burn more calories than walking.
Thanks for the blog.
I love to ride my bike to work. However the roads have become so busy it becomes a dangerous ordeal. I have had to take the walking and running options instead. Thanks for the blog
I love riding my bike to work every day. Luckily, I am fairly close (3.4 miles) and there are 2 lakes, both with paved trails around them on the way. My daughter has come into work a few times on her bike 14 inch. Burning calories right from the start!
I don’t bike. not because i don’t want to. it’s actually the opposite. problem is, i don’t have a bike. bikes here in our country are very expensive.i’d rather take the free public transport provided by a public servant tv channel than to buy a 2,000peso-worth mechanical vehicle. but i do want to bike if i have a bike for simple reasons that it’s eco-friendly and time-saving.
I really appreciate your post and you explain each and every point very well. Thanks for sharing this information. And I’ll love to read your next post too.

This article was written very well, so I to comment on the two
its better to ride not to walk….. coz if you think of high traffic you wouldn’t be able to get forward in life …….
example : if something is gonna happen in life it will happen….
Biking is good for health. I think every person has a moral responsibility towards environment and he should contribute towards it in some way. This is one of the ways you can do it.
Doing Biking is Eco-Friendly, especially when you are making short journey, it is good for you health and for the envorinment.

at our place (in one of the nation asean) special lanes for cyclists are not yet available. if there are bike paths that are also shared with the Pedestrian Street and partly to share with motor vehicles. so between pedestrians, motor vehicles and cyclists can intersect and its lack of security and comfort.
other than that the city place we stayed had an up and down the contours of the area and the weather is hot, so many people are reluctant to cycling
I like to bike to my place of work when the weather is allowed. Nevertheless, most city designs and developments have by no means regarded as this and green. They’re all created for vehicles as well as not for public transportations. Additionally, it’s extremely harmful to bike to function at most time and locations because there isn’t any location for biking. If we don’t alter this culture and habit, we will by no means have the ability to go green.
Cycling remains a very good thing for health, for clean air, reduce fuel consumption. Lets Go Green…. and save the Earth
I live in holland and a lot of people ride with their bikes to work, me too.
Its hard to ride your bike to work when the roads are so busy. Safer to walk here.

I was living in Davidson, NC this summer and working in Charlotte, NC a 20 mile commute. At first I was scared to bike to Charlotte because the roads are not set up for bikers and drivers are not always friendly. However, with the encouragement of a friend, I decided to bike and I absolutely loved it! There is nothing more empowering than waking up at the crack of dawn to bike in and miss rush hour, or to ride home at the end of a long day. However, it was definitely much easier in the summer because the days are longer. I have to start riding at 6 to miss rush hour. Much of my ride it on a road with one lane on each side and if I ride in rush hour I single handedly stop traffic for a bit. I also did not have a place to shower. This did not deter me, because I worked alone most of the day but I can understand why this would be a concern for most people. I am so glad you are asking these questions because i believe many people would love to bike if it became easier, safer, and more culturally acceptable.
Thanks for sharing this article of Marco island with us.Keep it up.
