Generally speaking vertical space (elevation) isn't handled quite as well as horizontal space, especially in most consumer level GPS units. I guess we should ask the folks in Region 8, 9, or 10 (Seattle, San Francisco, and Denver) what their experiences are.

In terms of the graffiti, I was more interested in the river than the Arch so I went up and put my hand on the base before promptly chasing my kids around the grassy area! Perhaps I've seen enough names scratched into everything that it just fades into the background.

This is a great post Casey. Were you as PO'd as I was at how people scratch their intitials into the metal at the base of the arch? I couldn't believe it when I saw that. How long do you think before basic mapping moves from the 2D to 3D on something more than the novelty scale that it is now? I don't recall but is the delta on elevation even greater in GPS units than the lat/lon?
